EcoFest Games
The following game taught kids how wind and coal are two different ways to produce the same results. The flyers helped to make the connection to real world examples.

Motion Detection Lights During the Summer of 2011, motion detection lights were installed in 98% of the building! The areas include classrooms, hallways, stairwells, offices, bathrooms and storage areas. Motion detecting lights reduce the amount of energy used by automatically shutting off the lights if there is no movement in the area for a predetermined amount of time. The energy savings are greatest in the stairwells, where few people are walking, except between classes, and the lights would otherwise be left on all the time. Signs are spread around MRHS to encourage teachers to turn off their lights when they are leaving the room.

Examining Teacher Energy Use
The following message was sent to all staff in Marriotts Ridge to inform them of their management practices:
"Good morning! A couple of weeks ago, some students were volunteering their time to check out how MRHS staff is doing with going green AFTER SCHOOL. This was the criteria that they looked at:
Lights on/Lights off/partially off :-)
There is mixed waste in the trash or recycling/Trash is only trash in trash and recycling in recycling :-)
The window was open/The window was closed :-)
The computer was on (looking also if the teacher was in the room/The computer was off :-)
Here is the results of that data:
Staff with Lights On: 46% /Staff with Lights Off: 54%
Staff with trash & recycling mixed: 43% / Staff with only trash: 57%
Staff with Windows Open: 7% / Staff with Windows Closed: 93%
Staff with Computers On: 35% / Staff with Computers Off: 65%
As you can see, our numbers are OK...all in the positive... BUT WE CAN DO BETTER!!
During the day:
- make sure kids are putting trash in the trash and recycling in the recycling
- turn OFF your lights when you leave your room. (yes there are the sensors, but turning off is better)
- do not open the windows
After school:
- turn off some/all overhead lights if you are the only one in the room or all lights when you leave
- make sure that your computers are OFF when you leave! Sleeping sucks energy! (if you have all of your electronics plugged into a power strip, turn that off!)
- make sure windows are closed
NEXT WEEK, STUDENTS WILL BE COMING AROUND AGAIN AFTER SCHOOL TO SEE IF WE HAVE IMPROVED!! LET'S MAKE A GROUP EFFORT TO BETTER THOSE NUMBERS!!!
THANKS!!"

Monitoring of Energy Use
AP Statistics students from the 2011-2012 school year, compared energy usage data from the past three years to statistically determine whether there was a difference in usage. Students found there was a difference in energy usage between the 2010/2011 and 2009/2010 school years, and most likely, electrical energy usage decreased because of motion detection lights and other conservation efforts.

Continued Monitoring of Energy Usage
The AP Statistics class has continually monitored energy usage in Marriotts Ridge in the 2012-2013 school year. The first file is the introduction to the project and includes information on energy usage totals. The second file is the grading rubric Mrs. Clarkin used to grade her students' Green School Projects. The third and fourth files are actual projects with mathematical work that students turned.

Holiday Message
The following message was sent to all staff before winter break.
The Green School Team would like to remind you that we can still be green during the
holidays. See the link before for ways to be friendly to Mother Earth this holiday season.
