On School Grounds:
Constructing BirdhousesOver the past two years, the Marriotts Ridge High School Environmental Club has worked on a project to construct birdhouses. The houses constructed are federally approved bluebird houses made out of wood. Each birdhouse was also painted in a light color so the inside does not overheat. The birdhouses were also weather-proofed. Five birdhouses were constructed and placed outside, one is by the entrance to the stadium, one is in a small garden next to the stadium, one is on a hill where the lawn is not cut, one is in a garden by the front door, and one is just off of the road buses come in on. The construction of these birdhouses helps the environment by providing a safe location for birds to raise a family, partially restoring the habitat that was lost when the school was constructed.

No Idling Proposal
The Environmental Club created a "No Idling Zone" proposal that was sent to the principal in late March. While we do not have an definitive results from this proposal, we are confident that this will be taken into strong consideration. The reason this proposal was written was because there are many parents who idle their cars in front of Marriotts Ridge while they are waiting for their kids to come. This practice of idling is harmful to the environment because it pollutes the air near the school and wastes valuable resources.
-Zach
This was email sent to the principal, Dr. Kaufman:
"The Environmental Club would like to propose the idea of putting a "No Idling" sign in front of the school where the parents drop off or pick up their children. In doing this, people will save gas and be more eco-friendly. Please reply with how we can help achieve this goal."
Also, a follow-up email was sent in order to clarify the wording on the proposed signs.
"Perhaps, "No idling vehicles."Maybe the sign can say "No Idling Zone" and have a picture. If we cannot do the picture, "Turn Off Your Engine", "Breathe Better", "Save Money", or "Idle Free Lane"."

Terrapin !
Each year Marriotts Ridge hosts a baby terrapin. Below is information about the terrapin for 2012-2013.
Our new baby terrapin arrived this week. Luke Hahn will be the student monitoring and taking care of our terp this year. Luke has named it [yes, it , remember they're gender neutral for 3 months] Sydney. I'm attaching some pictures if you're curious what the little sucker looks like. Sydney is about the size of a quarter now. Feel free to stop by anytime to visit Syd. We will raise Syd until late May at which point a chip will be implanted into him/her for tracking and he/she will be released on Poplar Island in the middle of the Chesapeake. Why should you care? Terps are the only natural predators of jellyfish in the Chesapeake Bay! They have also recently been taken off the endangered list and are now considered a 'threatened' species. If you're interested in the program, here's an update: Our terp from 4 years ago, Marley, was found nesting on Poplar Island. She laid 30 eggs and apparently hasn't left the island. So the program is working! |

Butterfly/Rain Garden
Danielle Fallon came into Marriotts Ridge on January 23, 2013 to present to the environmental club. She showed us what she accomplished as River Hill High School, and we gave her some insight on what Marriotts Ridge would probably do. The first file is Danielle's proposal to River Hill right before she began the process of installing a large rain garden. The second file is a receipt of the plants that she had installed in River Hill's Rain Garden. Leaders of the Marriotts Ridge environmental club have been in constant contact with Danielle and have contacted both the Howard County Groundskeeper and a leader of the Green Building Institute in an effort to facilitate the process before the end of the school year. We hope to have a final plan or proposal be the end of the school year. The third file is a reference file that Danielle presented to us and told us to refer to it when choosing plants for the garden. The fourth file is a guide to ecoscaping, presented to us by Danielle.

Volunteering at the Howard County Conservancy (2011-2012 school year)
The Environmental Club and the Future Business Leaders of America at MRHS joined together and volunteered one Saturday morning at the Howard County conservancy on Route 99. Volunteers planted trees, mulched, and weeded the area to preserve the natural environment.
