Co-curricular project
With this very interesting project, I am involved in the process with both my Art I and Theatre III G/T classes. Within Art I, my group members and I are constructing the stop-motion video itself. We recieved the script from one of Mrs. Brady's Earth and Space Science students, and this gave us our characters, plot, and concept for our story board. The characters and objects found in the video are made from colored paper and cut to form the necessary shapes. Using a digital camera, we take individual photos that we upload to a computer to put together and make our final video.

Principles of Engineering Builds Automatic Sorting Process
In Mr. Rosnik's Principles of Engineering class, one of the most challenging yet applicable projects the students completed was the "Have You Lost Your Marbles?" assignment. In teams of two, we had to program and create an automatic sorting process, similar to ones used in an industrial recycling plant. Although we sorted marbles, similar sorting devices are used in landfills to sort trash. In America's effort to become more green, students and engineers could use this concept to reuse, remanufacture, and recycle products back into the manufacturing cycle. Automating the process of sorting trash and recyclable materials would save time, man-power, and money while increasing the effectiveness of the cycle. Through this simulation project, students experienced how school projects can apply to real-world problems that can expedite our mission to go green!

GT Independent Research
In this elective class, taught by Mr. Paul Eckert, students choose a research topic to learn more about and develop a final product at the end of the year. One student created a website about American Shad, a fish found in the Chesapeake Bay and all along the east coast. Here is a link to the website created by the student: http://americanshad.weebly.com
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Approximately 32 students from grades 10-12.
Co-curricular project
I am writing a lesson activity to accompany a book about the environment that another student wrote. My topic is global warming and I am writing it for a third grade class.

ENGLISH
Essays on "Into Thin Air"
English 10 GT had the following assignment following the reading of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer.
The Climber as an Author
Jon Krakauer is part of the growing genre of “adrenaline narratives”, a term created to distinguish this type of literature from the more common and familiar travel and adventure narratives. Krakauer’s story is unique not only because of the extreme setting but because of the unique characteristics of the author. However, while Krakauer may be one of the pioneering authors in this genre, he is certainly not the first. Climbers began tackling the heights of Mount Everest as early as the 1920s. Your task is to explore what it takes to be an extreme mountain climber or how Krakauer’s adrenaline narrative compares with others.
You have six options for this research assignment:
5. Is climbing Everest good for the mountain environment and the surrounding communities? Argue, with researched facts, that Everest expeditions are either beneficial or harmful to the mountain environment and surrounding communities. Be sure to address the counter argument in your paper.

Monitoring Energy Use
AP Statistics students from the 2011-2012 school year, compared energy usage data from the past three years to statistically determine whether there was a difference in usage. Students found there was a difference in energy usage between the 2010/2011 and 2009/2010 school years, and most likely, electrical energy usage decreased because of motion detection lights and other conservation efforts.

SCIENCE
Approximately 117 students in grades 10 and 11.
Biology G/T & Chemistry G/T Host the Science Fair
The science fair at Marriotts Ridge is an annual event, and is the final step in a two year long project that begins in Biology G/T in 9th or 10th grade. Students select their own topic and carry out background research during Biology. Students write an introduction on their project using their background research, and they design their own experiment to conduct. In Chemistry, students collect data and compile their work into a paper and construct a display board to present to judges, who are professional scientists. Some of the topics covered have direct connections to the environment. -- Biology Student
9th Grade Science Climate Change Books - Co-curricular Project
Topic: All books/videos created are based on climate change.
Students researched & wrote books in 2nd quarter. 3rd quarter they grouped together and edited the books - shared them with Art 1 students and Art 1 Students are making stop motion animation videos. We should have a final stop motion video by April 1st to share. Sally Livingston's kids are doing the voiceovers.
We have also sent a ppt of questions to ask elementary school students in the county. I have actual answers. The ppt I attached is from one of my class periods. About 65 students were reached in all of these lessons from JUST my Earth Science classes. I have attached 2 book examples (Dan Must Move & the Town Called Crown). I have also included a sample of a scene from the stop motion video they are creating for elementary school teachers to utilize.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Approximately 48 students in grades 9-12.
CNN Student News
Students watch CNN Student News in all American Government classes. The CNN Student News is a program made every weekday and it is about ten minutes long. The CNN Student News delivers students information about the world around them in a way which appeals to them. Occasionally, CNN Student News will cover a topic related to the environment. On February 23, 2012 CNN Student News covered an eighth grade art class that was selling sculptures of sea turtles in order to raise money to help the endangered species by adopting a sea turtle. The entire program and transcript for that day is available at:

Theater
Approximately 19 students in grades 10-12.
Co-curricular Project
In my Theatre class, I assigned certain scripts to my fellow class members, and with these scripts we are doing voice-overs that provide the narration and/or character voices for the video. A big part of this is to really analyze our scripts and try to determine the proper intonation and speed in which we need to speak. Since the viewing audience of these videos is third graders, that is something to keep in mind with regards to intonation because it is crucial to keep interest in the video. This is a very enriching project for everyone involved. Being a junior, I am engaged with this because I'm enjoying myself while both learning things about these art forms and relearning some climate change concepts that I studied in my freshman year.

Spanish Class Works on Earth Projects
This lesson was on the earth. For the project, we made brochures on environmental problems. We used different word tenses in each of the four sections. The sections consisted of: causes, the problem, solutions, and extra information. It was also required that students add pictures to show what the section was about and to make it interesting. When the projects were finished the students got to read each others and learn more about our Earth AND Spanish.
